More than 10% of BPI’s 400+ Member companies are based in Canada, while many others run active manufacturing and sales offices throughout the country. 

In recent years, Canada has prioritized waste diversion on a national scale, unveiling strategies that affect compost and compostable packaging. In response, BPI has engaged with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) on issues including: 

• Communicating the value of compostable materials within larger efforts to regulate single-use plastics, to ensure that national goals to reduce pollution are adequately met 
  
• Distinguishing compostable products—which are inherently “recycled” into valuable soil amendments--from readily recyclable products eligible to meet post-consumer recycled content standards
  

• Advocating for organic waste diversion programs to effectively reduce methane emissions in addition to landfill-only capture systems

BPI also remains active at the provincial level, having worked with the Ontario MECP on field testing, harmonizing standards and certifications for BNQ, and further developing provincial extended producer responsibility (EPR) programs for packaging.
